When I listen to your podcast I can just feel your anger. I think the anger phase is common (almost universal) for those going through a faith crisis. I have found that it is generally a phase for most. For your mental heath I think it is better that you work to a place where you can be at peace.

I hope you can take some of the stuff you talked about and write a letter to your father. Tell him some of what you said about thinking about him as a 19 year old. It may do great for your relationship, not just to change him.

Richard said he told his dad that he had covenanted under penalty of death to follow the leaders, be obedient to them, and consecrate everything to the Church. That’s not true. The covenant under penalty of death was only with respect to the keeping aspects of the ceremony secret. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_(Mormonism) Adding to what was likely an already frustrating conversation for his dad, there was probably additional frustration for his dad because he couldn’t correct Richard on this point without breaking his own covenants. That said, I agree with Richard that it’s still important to have all the facts when making any covenant under penalty of death or not.

I would agree that it isn’t really consent when you don’t know what you are going to agree too and then in a public setting with extreme pressure to go-along. I have done it, but I don’t even feel that if I honestly come to where I don’t believe any of it is true, then it doesn’t matter as you it was a promise to nobody.
